reflection blog post
I find the most interesting thing is that I get a lot of amazing news about food such as the trouble in "Eating at the Edge" and the research of eating red meat. By knowing a large number of interesting points in this class, I get some skills of doing research so that these points can support my opinions in my essay. Research is always good and it can show that your academic essay is full of convincing evidences. Insisting doing research is good for me, and I will increase quoting evidences in my essay.
Following your taste: enjoying Chinese food
Food is something we required every day.
More and more food comes together by people sharing the food. It makes people
can have food with different styles or even from different nations. I only feel
like enjoy Chinese food and this feeling becomes stronger after I came to the
United States. As an international student, I don’t always have time to enjoy
the food from my hometown, due to the schedule; I have to finish my meal in
several minutes sometimes so I must eat fast food to make me full with energy. In
my mind, I think most of the Chinese students who lives in the United States
will agree with me because I could see Chinese students in every Chinese
restaurant I went. Some of them just move out of campus because of the food in
the dining hall and eating in Chinese restaurants or cook themselves instead.
I love Chinese food and usually eat a
lot in Chinese restaurants compared with eating in the dining hall. First of
all, Chinese food is delicious and always has a lot of oil with the dishes.
This can make the food smells good and attract my attention of taste. The
liquid oil in the food makes my throat get a smooth feeling while eating. It satisfies
me a lot. For American food, these is oil inside the fast food, for example,
fast food, there is oil with them like French fires and the meat in the burgers.
However, the oil in this kind of food is not liquid even when the food is hot. This
kind of food like burgers always have pieces of bread covering so it is usually
dry and needs drinks to eat with or the throat will feel uncomfortable. Secondary,
we have cooked vegetables in Chinese food. There vegetables are always hot with
oil and fabulous taste. Also in Chinese food, there are not only broccolis and
lettuce but also a lot of other vegetables that most of the Americans have
never seen before. After some complicated steps of cooking, they are all
delicious but tastes different. The most famous one is green vegetable, which
is the most common vegetable that Chinese people eat. I hate eating vegetables
when I was young. At that time, I just eat little food but spend all the meal
time watching Television instead. Now, especially coming into the United
States, I finally realize how good the Chinese cooking vegetables are and I
only can get green vegetables in some Chinese restaurants. In American food,
most vegetables are in salad which is uncooked and mixed with many kinds of
fruits, other foods and some sauce. I found some of them are really sour or
sweet and makes me uncomfortable to eat them all. Absolutely, most of the
American vegetables are cold just like salad, because of being uncooked.
I enjoy the taste of Chinese food very
much because I can feel the original taste of the food in Chinese food. For
example, a chicken soup, a very common Chinese dish in my daily life, is only
cooked with some salt and water but not any other materials. But it can make
the soup really delicious because people stewing the soup for more than two
hours or even half a day! It makes the original delicious taste of the chicken
come out but I can’t find this kind of taste in a chicken steak or the American
soup. These cooking ways can not only make the taste of Chinese food good but
also get the nutrition of it beneficial for our bodies and making us healthy. When
choosing materials for cooking, the Chinese people always pick the fresh food,
which is totally different from the Americans. The food and cooking materials
are so fresh that Chinese people always get from the local farmers and picking
very carefully. They go to the farmers’ market and buy from the farmers with
fresh food instead of shopping in the supermarket since the quality of the food
is getting lower after being packaged and putted in the supermarket. When they
want to get some pickled food, most of the adults can make on their own with
the fresh food they got. The old citizens always have some old but good
traditional ways of making the pickled food. Because of getting the fresh food
and making pickled on their own, the food materials are always nice, clean and
fresh. Americans are really different; they eat a lot of red meat like bacons
and hot dogs but the Chinese almost never do it. In the essay “Red Meat
Consumption and Mortality”, the authors pointed out “we found that a higher
intake of red meat was associated with a significantly elevated risk of total,
CVD, and cancer mortality, and this association was observed for unprocessed
and processed red meat, with a relatively greater risk for processed red meat.”

that eating too much red meat, no matter it is processed or unprocessed, can
lead a higher risk or some serious illnesses and diseases.
Chinese people like Chinese food. People
will think this is kind of enjoyment of their own taste and culture. What’s
more is that Americans like Chinese dishes as well. “When it comes to eating
out, Americans love Chinese. And Chinese restaurants deserve credit for keeping
a lid on saturated and trans fat, thanks to vegetable oil, no cheese, and a
host of seafood, poultry, and (hooray!) vegetable dishes. (While the sat fat in
some dishes seems high, the unsaturated fat in their oil lowers bad cholesterol
more than the oil's saturated fat raises bad cholesterol.)” (Jayne Hurley and
Bonnie Liebman, 13) This evidence shows that americans prefer Chinese
restaurants while eating out because the dishes have more natural food but less
cheese. Even some of them have a lot of fat, but some oil can decrease this
problem. So, it isn’t a big problem. In the essay "Fowl Trouble", the
author cook showed that in the United States, the process of chicken feeding is
becoming into a quick and large program. Because of the huge requirement of the
market, a chick is growing up to a chicken within a short time. People find
this way has high efficiency and can always make monkey so that most of the
farms do that and produce a lot of chicken to the market. The chicken meat for
sandwiches and burgers are always this kind of meat. In China, because of some
fast food coming from the United States such as McDonalds and KFC, people have
this kind of chicken producing process as well, but they still keep the
traditional ways of feeding chicken and this kind of chicken take over the most
requirement in the market. The Chicken soup as I mentioned before, can only be
cooked by the natural fed chicken, or the soup will not be tasty at all.
However, Chinese food is expensive here
and always complicated. This means that I can’t eat Chinese food for all the
meals. Due to the schedule, sometimes I have to finish my meal in 5 minutes
because of the short 10 minutes break: I also have to go to another classroom.
In this case, I often choose fast food to make myself full and sometimes eat
nothing but drink some soda instead. Fast food is efficient enough to be
finished in several minutes. Even sometimes you can’t finish it in time; maybe
you can have a choice to take the food with you and go, eating while on the road
or having a class. Fast food like burgers, French fires and pizzas are mostly
prepared so people do not have to wait for these foods. They can hold the food
with their hands and just eat without the requirement of other tools like
chopsticks while eating Chinese food. It saves a lot of time. Oppositely, while
cooking Chinese food, it always needs a lot of steps and time to make it
prefect. There are also a lot of ways of cooking while making Chinese food.
Steaming is a good way of cooking which can keep the nutrition without a heavy
taste or fat: “Anything steamed is obviously good, as is Jum (poached), Chu
(broiled), Kow (roasted), Shu (barbecued), lightly stir-fried, dry stir-fried,
or braised. Anything breaded, fried, or coated in flour is not.” (Brandon
Guarneri) People enjoy and protect the culture of Chinese food like having
table manners and using chopsticks to eat. Chopsticks are good because it can
leave the extra sauce out of the food at the bottom of the bowl or the plate. (Christy
Maskeroni)Chinese foods always have oil and sauce on the bottom of the plate
and chopsticks is beneficial to prevent you from eating too salty. Also, steps
of eating are a kind of culture but can have the best taste. In my hometown
Suzhou, for example, we have a famous dish called steamed crab. These crabs are
always steamed in the pot with high pressure after being cleaned. Since it was
steamed with its whole bodies, you have to use your hands and teeth to get the
meat from the shell and it always takes a lot of time. But steaming the whole
body can keep all the nutrition and give you a original delicious taste of the
crab.
In my opinion, a meal is something you
should enjoy and make yourself satisfied, not just eat and go; so I always go
for my favorite tastes and feelings while choosing food. Chinese food can
always fit my feeling so I can get the original taste of the food, and I am use
to eating Chinese food since I was young, these are why I spend most of my
meals in Chinese restaurants. They amazing part is eating Chinese food is so
good and beneficial to my body compared with the American fast food, that’s
what I don’t know before. So that, I will insist on having Chinese food but
sometime get some fast food to catch up with my schedule.

In the article “Unhappy
meals” which is written by Michael Pollan, the author pointed out people have
unhealthy eating habits in recent society. He gave us a clear view of what
factors or causes may affect people’s health about eating. Pollan has some
suggestion for people to change into a healthy habit of eating. In his mind,
follow the habits of the old is a good way of eating healthy. People should buy
and eat the food which exists for a long time rather than the new things
because the society is changing too fast and the people are not healthier than
they were in the past. Also, don’t eat too full; otherwise, the stomach will
have a hard job of digesting the food. I really agree with this point because
there is an only saying in Chinese to ask people to have good breakfast, full
lunch but little dinner. The last is people should eat more and more kind of
food just like several dish in a meal. For example, have meat, vegetables and
fruit. This is a good way of keep the balance of nutrition and also this can help
you to have several tastes.
In Dupuis’s
article, “Angels and Vegetables”, it shows the idea of the spirit: he thinks
that people should eat following their hearts but not always listen to some
scientific reports or some sayings. This means people always change their
eating habits by the newest saying or reports, so they lose the real thing in eating:
the taste, the feeling by their hearts. When I need to choose the food, I just
go to what I want and what I like. I sometimes may listen to some healthy
reasons but usually just go with my feeling.

Thoughts on Eating Practices
Now I spend a lot of meals on french files and chicken sandwiches. As the points in my short essay 5, french fries are harmful which can make me fat and even cause some disease like cancer. It is horrible. Chicken sandwiches which is a kind of junk food just like the views in the movie last Friday. Now, I pay a lot of attentions to the health and diet while eating. I am interesting about changing the drinks of meals. I drink a lot of soda which I think is not healthy at all. To change my eating practice, I may try drinking some more mike or tea while having meals. This kind of drinks are more beneficial for my body or have some more nutrition I think.

Zechi's blog is about skipping breakfast which is a common thing in our student life. Also, Yuan also pointed out the same thing. Because of the schedule, many students work hard in the night and just keep sleeping until in the afternoon. Sometimes, it's depends on how you define the breakfast just like waking up at 12 and it is the first meal in the day but it is also the lunch time.Ran talked about eating disorder, especially the international students. Compared to the american students, they have more stress and always eat when feeling hungry. Deng's essay is about vegetarian and diets. He pointed out some important elements and talked something about its benefits.

French fires: popular tasty potatoes but dangerous
French fries are concerned as one of the
most common staple food in western countries. In my daily life, I can see
French fires everywhere: in the supermarket, the dining hall and the
restaurants, and I find they are popular because almost everyone just eating
them every day. As to be the fired potatoes, French fries are always tastier
than the common cooking potatoes and people all like them. They can make people
full because they are made of potatoes.
French fires become a symbol of the junk
food that people always eats. In the food journal, it is easy to find that
almost everyone eat French fries in that three days even some of the students
have them almost every meal. Our dining hall in the Centennial Hall keeps
providing French fries every day and every meal. French fries are sold so well and
I find the chief just keep frying them and baking some meat to provide enough
food for students. “More than a quarter of all potatoes sold in the US are
turned into fries.” This means in the United States, French fries has a huge
market requirement so people make and provide so many French fires. In a
survey, people find more than 90 per cent of the consumers at Burger King have
the same characteristic: they order French fries. I eat a lot of food which is
American style after coming to the United States and I find I am getting fatter
than I was in China. Moreover, on the roads, there are a lot of American guys
walking or driving with big stomachs so that French fries can make people
overweight. “For dieters, French fries have long been a forbidden thing.” This
shows how much power that French fries can make people become fat. Furthermore,
fat will always lead some other health problems or even illnesses. “Heavy
consumption of French fries has been linked to an epidemic of obesity,
increased blood cholesterol, and consequent coronary heart disease and
atherosclerosis.” Being overweight is totally not good for health because of
increasing blood cholesterol, heart disease and atherosclerosis. These horrible
disease can be well prevented and decreased if people take care of their diet.
In late 2005, there was a survey about
French fries. “Harvard, and Brigham
Young University evaluated nurses who had consumed French fries at least once weekly during early
childhood.” As the result, twenty seven per cent of these children were
likely to have breast cancer as adults. This means French fires will lead the
increasing of the risk of getting a cancer. “French fries have high levels of
acrylamide, reported to be a possible cancer-causing substance.” Some parts of
the potatoes may make the acrylamide while frying in the oil in high
temperature. This chemical is dangerous because it will lead people to have
cancer. As I know, cancer is so dangerous and hopeless because almost nobody
can save you if having this kind of disease. A lot of people who have cancer
spend all the money they and their family have but just can have a few days to
live in this world, only little people can survive if having a cancer. Even
eating French fries just have a little probability of cancer and a lot of
people just eating French fries everyday still don’t have cancers, but why stay
always from this dangerous risk?
In conclusion, French fires are always
harmful to our health just like making people fat, the diseases caused by
overweight and also the risk of cancer. Some research said that children are
the people who will be affected by the cancer-causing substance easiest.
However, they always enjoy French fires because they just want to eat tasty
food. It is a hard work to prevent children from having cancers and maybe
adults should eating less French fires and teach the children the different
between healthy food and unhealthy food. People can also try some other ways of
cooking potatoes or changed the original menu of the fast food so that they can
have both the convenience and the health.

Response to food journals
Many
students like drinking soda, and tea but also some milk and coffee. Some of
them eat a lot of French files and males prefer meat meals. A glass of water is
beneficial after waking up so some people always do it. Time of meals is always
depending to their schedule. They often eat a simple meal for breakfast or even
lunch but have a better and magnificent meal like Chinese food for dinner.

Food Journal
On Thursday, May 10th, I woke up
at 11.50 am and I had a class from 12 to 3 so I didn't eating anything but
drink a cup of water after waking up. In the afternoon about 5 pm, I went to
Jason’s Thai with my friends and ate the mutton pot, spicy chicken and pork
ribs with a glass of Thai tea. At night
about 10 pm I went to the shop and got a Pepsi and an ice tea.
On Friday, May 11th, I woke up
at 11.20 am and went to the dining hall for lunch. I ate a chicken sandwich and
some French files with a glass of apple juice. After the class on Friday, I went
back to my room and made myself a cup of green tea about 3 pm. At 6 pm on
Friday, I went to the dining hall and get a chicken sandwich, a piece of pizza
and some broccoli with a glass of Sprite as my drink. At night at about 11 pm, I
went to the vending machine and bought a Pepsi because the shop was closed.
On Saturday, May 12th, I made
myself a cup of coffee at 3 am and then drank some water at 5 am before I went
to bed. I woke up very late at 7 pm so that I just ordered some food from the
East Asia Garden for braised chicken and some chili and sour potato as the
dishes. And also I ate some rice at the same time. Later on, at about 10 pm, I went
downstairs and bought a bottle of Crush which is the orange favor.

Sheep and mutton: most ancient provider with culture in
different nations
Food is something that people need every
day but now people only can see the food not the ingredient. American people
pay a lot of attentions to the energy and the convenience to the food but I pay
more attentions to the taste. Sometimes, I chose to go to Jason’s Thai, the
nearest Chinese restaurant which is almost located beside the DU campus so my
friends and I often go or order something for meals. There is also some
American food or Japanese food like Sushi, but we just go for the traditional
Chinese food there. One of my favorite dishes is the mutton pot. There is
delicious Chinese vermicelli inside and also the mutton in small pieces. A
mutton pot with some rice can always make me satisfied after the work whole day
but it reminds me of my hometown as well.
As we know, mutton is the meat come from
the sheep. It is one of the most common meats in people’s daily lives. Mostly,
this meat is from the sheep older that one year but nowadays over two years.
The sheep are its most ancient provider
of meat to human beings. In the United States, most sheep are eaten as lamb
which means the small sheep which are younger than one year old. “In the United
States, most lamb is grain fed, which gives it a milder flavor.” Because the
requirement of the meat market is really large today and the wild lambs cannot
satisfy people’s requirement: if hunting too much wild animals, it will lead
the species to become extinguished which may destroy the balance of species and
food chain. We don’t want any species go die out so the price of wild animals
is getting higher and most people eat the grain-fed animals just like the
sheep. There lambs are always between 70 and 100 pounds. “Mutton, the meat of
mature sheep, is more popular in Britain and Europe than in the United
States.” I found that mutton is also
popular in China and there are several kinds of famous mutton soup and mutton
shashlik in China. Just like the one in my hometown, Suzhou. There is a small
town called Cangshu which is famous for the mutton. We have mutton festival in
that town in winter and attract a lot of people’s attention and taste.
About
11,000 years ago or even earlier, the sheep were tamed by the nomadic people in
the Middle East and Asia people. As people in different parts of the world got
to know each other, people bring sheep to the countries all over the world,
just like moving to the Europe and then were brought to the American. Sheep
also appeared in the early European religious and mythological writing and
history. “In Ancient Egypt, the ram was the symbol of several gods. In Greek mythology
Jason pursued the Golden Fleece. The Abraham of the Bible and Torah sacrificed
a ram instead of his son.” This is like an evidence of the culture and history
of sheep in Europe which is relative to the religious and mythological and can
stand for the special meaning in people in mind in the ancient years. This is a
symbol of the early understanding and relationship of human beings and sheep.
Furthermore, there is also some culture in early history in China. People know
that they are twelve animals in Chinese culture means the Chinese zodiac.
Moreover, there were some ancient Chinese bronze ware are designed with the
shape of Sheep’s head before more than 3,000 years ago. These examples can both
mean the sheep has significant meanings and influences to the Chinese people.
The sheep
and lambs production is all over the United States and seasonal. “This is
mostly due to the fact that lambs exhibit seasonal estrus, meaning that most
breeds only breed during one time of the year, which is usually in the fall
during the long days.” The older sheep can breed in the fall so they are only a
period of time that comes up a lot of sheep babies. However, this
characteristic will lead to be only one kind of sheep in a year. As to get a
good breed of sheep, they need to select the good breed from a several kinds
and take some experiment to get the advantages or disadvantages to get the best
one which can produce the most meat with high efficiency. Usually, sheep are in
the farmlands and have the machine with technology to produce meat in a long
process, they have long steps and every machine has its own job like cutting
the wools and bleeding.
Mutton is
very healthy and has a lot of nutrition which can help people feel warm in the
cold days. It is beneficial to people’s Spleen and kidney and can help the
lying-in woman. However, there is a strange smell and state of the mutton which
stops a lot of people from eating or even trying then. Overall, mutton is a
good source of meat eater which is better and healthier than pork and beef I
think, especially in the winter days.

P7:Response to Pollan’s “An Animal’s Place,” the introduction to Estabrook’s Tomatoland, and the infographic by Cook.
In the three articles this time, all of them are about the food resources and materials. In "An Animal's Place", which is written by Michael Pollan, the author pointed out the relationship between human beings and animals. As people eating a lot of meat every day, they hunt animal for food. Even if some vegetarians stop eating meat from animals there are still a large number of meat requirements every day. However, animals are easy to die in the wild world, people can provide them a better place to live and feed them food. Animals also provide productions for people and it helps both of people and animal. And it seems no too bad. The second article, introduction of “On the Tomato Trail”, is about the conditions and environment of food just like tomatoes. The author shows the difference on the taste and appearance between the tomatoes in different years. In the last article, “Fowl Trouble”, Cook talked about the harm and problems of the broiler chicken in recent society. The chicken is getting bigger than those in the past. The requirement of the market leads the production of chicken into a new one, which is dangerous for the workers in the process of production and checking. Some of the workers even became disabled because of the infection. Response to "Our National Eating Disorder"
In
the article “Our National Eating Disorder” which is written by Michael Pollan,
the author pointed out the unhealthy diet and wrong eating habits in American people’s
daily lives. These habits make their daily diet in a mess with disorder which
means the people follow the wrong things that they should follow like the
energy. The reason of having the disordered diet is that they listen to all
kinds of reports and articles with believing these theories there. Every time there
comes a new report or article; people may change and listen to it without their
own thinking. As a big country without a long history, the United States do not
have enough culture of food. Because all the food there is brought by the
immigration, there are too many kinds of food for people to choice but none of
the food is their own food. They listened to people in other places and follow
the theories that they used in the past but obsolete now. Actually, a large
number of food is not tasty at all and they don’t have high energy just like
the vegetables. Because of the rule of convenience, a lot of Americans just hurry
up to save time for their work and only pay attention to the food which can
provide energy. The lack of other nutrition is serious and leads their bodies
to get over weight. For me, I really pay attention to the taste of food and
enjoy the food I like such as pork and chocolate. However, I still insist on
eating some vegetables to keep my body healthy.

Food
and culture are always relative in our society. Food in every country is usually
different from any other ones with the different ways of eating food and the
tools for eating standing for the history and the culture of the country.
People in different countries have different traditional food so they prefer
different favors and tastes of food, so is China. China is one of the countries
in the world which has the longest history of more than 5,000 years so the food
history and culture are plentiful enough to get Chinese special
characteristics.
As
we know, China is a big country with large land area and huge population. People
divided the country into several provinces and all the provinces have their own
special taste of dishes. The food in different two provinces taste like two opposite
favors even sometimes they are close to each other. However, we can get the
food from other provinces without travelling: there are a large number of
restaurant which provide the food from other cities in China. Because of the
huge population, we can see Chinese and Chinese restaurant almost everywhere.
In Denver, there are so many Chinese restaurants there that remind people of
the delicious Chinese food with the food culture. But most of the American
people just think all of the Chinese restaurants are the same. Actually, food
in different restaurants which were set up by different people from different
provinces in China is in different styles. For example, Golden Shanghai, my favorite
Chinese restaurant in Denver, has the Shanghai favor and style of food. Because
of the location of my hometown, Suzhou, a modern city with the newest
technology of development which is really close to Shanghai, so the food there
can always remind me of the food in my hometown.
Food

Shanghai is getting from the traditional old Shanghai into a new Shanghai with
the combination of the characteristics all round the world. This can be
expressed perfectly on the food: Shanghai food is changed into the style of a
combination of the food across the whole China. I think Shanghai food is like
the traditional Jiangnan food which is like the one in my hometown, Suzhou with
the food such as the steamed fish without the heavy taste. In the traditional
way of cooking, people cook the whole fish after some cleaning and only add
some salt and wine to keep the natural favor and taste of the fish. This is
kind of the original cooking method which lasts for a long period of time. In
my memory, I was told that Suzhou has a long history of over 2,500 years so the
people just keep using this method of cooking fish even now. However, after
eating it, you can get the taste in your mouth and get the feeling clearly,
that could be a reason why people insist using this method of cooking. Fish is
always popular in Shanghai because Shanghai lies near the Huangpu River, people
can get fresh fish and shrimps easily that eating fish becomes a habit on table
that Shanghai people always prepare some fish for big meals. However, people in
other parts of China cooking other kinds of fish with the same material, for
example, the people in Sichuan province enjoy hot and spicy favor so they put a
lot of chili while cooking the fish. They cut the fish into several
middle-sized pieces instead of steam the whole fish. And then, they boiled
these pieces of fish in a big pot with the spicy soup and the chili in it. Not
only fish, but also other dishes like the chicken potatoes and the meat are
also spicy and hot there. The reasons of eating spicy food are probably two
causes. Firstly, I think this place is always humid and cool, so eating hot and
spicy can keep people warm in cold days. The second reason may be about the
traditional habit and some story of the ancient people makes the local people
enjoy hot and spicy food. In Shanghai, all these spicy Sichuan food is easy to
find in the city but there is still some difference between the Sichuan
restaurant in Shanghai and the real Sichuan food. I believe the food in local
families and restaurants is the best and the food from a long distance, for
example, the Chinese food in the US is like the fake one compared the real
Chinese food. Since the development of technology and economy of Shanghai, a
large number of immigrants from other parts of China become new citizens in
Shanghai. These people are mostly looking for jobs or going to work in Shanghai
but some of them are like the chance catcher for making money such as running a
restaurant. These people just want to make money so they may cook for tasks:
they don’t really take care of their food and don’t have enough passion and
patient while cooking which makes the quality of food is not good as the
traditional food. Also, by staying in another city for a long time, they won’t
remember everything about the food in their memory; this becomes a big problem
which leads the taste of these restaurants getting worse. That means the
quality of the same type of food can also represent the emotion and the effort
of the cook.

only the food itself can represent the culture but also the ways of eating is a
symbol of the culture. For example, table manners. In western countries, people
use knives and forks to cut the meat into small pieces and eat. They think
eating a big piece of food which is even bigger that the mouth is a kind of
impoliteness on the table. In China, people all use chopsticks to eat instead
of knives and forks and they can get the food easily even some small round
pieces like the peanuts. In my memory, I can use chopsticks easily when I was a
young child and I cannot even remember that I have ever got a hard training of
using chopsticks. The Chinese name for chopsticks has changed over time. It is believed the first chopsticks were developed over 5000
years ago in China. Early Asian man would retrieve his food from the fire using
sticks or branches broken from trees. Later, as the population grew and
resources became scarce, people would cut food into smaller pieces to save fuel
because the smaller portions cooked faster. This eliminated the need for
knives, and chopsticks became the utensil of choice. It is also showed
that a pair of chopsticks is a symbol of Chinese history and culture because of
its position in China: “Originally known as jia (to hold), the utensil assumed the name zhu around the Qin–Han period (221 BCE–220 CE). Zhu, however, is
homophonous (having the same pronunciation) as stop or bore (by
insects). The Chinese, especially those who boated in the south, considered the
word unlucky and replaced it with a word sounding like kuai, a homophone of quick, sometime during the Qing Dynasty” in
the Chinese long history. Moreover, my families told me that while eating but
not using the chopstick, for example, while drinking the soup, we cannot insert
the chopsticks into the bowl of rice but we have to put the chopsticks beside
the bowl or lying on the bowl.
However,
only a pair of chopsticks is not enough to get all the food. Sometimes people
have to get the liquid soups or the very soft food like Tofu, they still use
spoons. However, we never use forks and knives and even plates in the
traditional Chinese meal. We can get the food by chopsticks on the table easily
instead of forks and it is fine to hold a big piece of food with your hand
while eating especially for the big piece of meat with bones. We have bowls
full of rice and people put the food on the bowl instead of a plate. While
drinks a bowl of soup, we just use a big spoon to get some soup from the big
pot into our own bowl and start enjoying the soup. People have two ways of
drinks soup: with a spoon or just hold the bowl and drink it. Both of them are
fine in China and Chinese always think that males should eat a lot. If males
eat too smoothly, they will be thought about being womanish and this really a
bad impression of a man in China. Chinese like sharing food, and parents always
ask their children to eat with their families. Family meal is a significant
part of Chinese people’s life. Usually, the seats are in ordered so people
should sit in order with their ages and positions in the family. On the table, People
sit around a round desk and they eat the same food. When sometimes, more than
ten people eat together on the table, they may use a big table with a piece of
moveable glasses on it so people do not have to worry about the distance
between his body and the dishes. Furthermore, Chinese food is always in order. Because
of not having the mode of fast food, not only the food is complicated but also
the eating steps are complex. People have cold dishes at the very beginning and
then have some meat and vegetables. At last, they may have a big pot of soup
and eating the rice.
To
sum up, as can be seen from the article, food is relative to the culture
because it can kind of represent the culture. In China, the tastes of the food
made from the same materials are usually different because people there use
different method of cooking. The different favor they prefer shows the Geographical
Conditions of the cities. The location of some city leads the cold climate so
they may eat hot and spicy food, on the other hand, like Shanghai, as being the
center of the economy with the development of technology, more and more people

Response to Eating at the Edge
In Horwitz’s
article, the author pointed out the changes of eating style because of the
change in people’s life. Several years ago, people were always chatting with
others while eating on the table, but now they eat alone and quickly without
talking to others instead. We live in a “timeless time,”(42)This sentence clearly showed the main idea: Eating faster with simple style. The author showed an example of soup to support his
idea: the soup was fit in a big bowl in the past but changed into the
individual small bowls for per person instead. This shows that people eating
together with friends or families so that they share the large size of food together
and people on the table get the same food. However, by changing the size to
individual small size, people only get their own food and eating alone and this
shows the meaning of “Eating at the Edge”. In this process of change, it’s like
people have more choices of food because they can go and eat for their want
while ordering. Everyone only have to think about himself and order his favorite
dishes and favors because they don’t have to eat the same food. On the other
hand, because of the individual meal and the eating style, this will lead to
the lack of communication and reducing of people’s relationship. In my opinion,
having meals is one of the best ways to reduce the distance between people and
improve their relationship. It is beneficial not only for making or meeting good
friends but also in daily life or business meeting. In China, people used to
have their whole family eating together at home for dinner or eating with a lot
of friends or partners of working. "Taking time to share food, as part of a daily routine (not a special occasion), is becoming less common in the u.s. as unstructured eating patterns become more familiar and varied."(45)The author shows the fact that american people changed their eating habit into the unstructured style. By the appearance of the fast food specially the food from the US, the
people in the working class just get some food there and go because of their
busy work. This is like an influence of it and it also make the Chinese eating habit into the same as the American one. Then, even some Chinese fast food restaurant comes up like “the old
uncle” and get popular quickly. I think this is a part of the food culture
which we should protect them. Even someone thinks the fast food style is really
suitable for some people but I believe the existence of the traditional style are
more significant even just make a mixture of this kind of food culture,
otherwise, the eating style in China, for example, may totally change into the American
fast food style in a period of time.

Korean barbeque and food culture: Q Table BBQ Buffet
Q Table BBQ Buffet is a little far away
from the campus. It’s a Korean barbeque which is famous for the meat there. I don’t
think this is a chain restaurant because I have never heard of its name before I
came to Denver. However, I have a lot of friends recommend that barbeque to me
so I went and tried last Sunday.
After driving for 40 minutes, we got to
the Q Table BBQ Buffet. While coming into the restaurant, there is a waiting room
for the consumers. Even though the decoration of this waiting room is not magnificent,
this place is still a kind of convenience for having more walking space and
giving people a good rest. Mostly, we don’t need to stay in the waiting room
because of so many tables there. This barbeque is not a small one so it can fit
a large number of consumers even in the weekends. There are two kinds of seats
there: two sits tables for people coming alone or business meals, and the four
sits tables for families. Most of people coming there are Asian but there are
still many American families for trying different styles of food. As can be
seen from its name, the barbeque is a buffet restaurant. That is a good choice
for teenagers just like the students in DU. Because of the schedule of the
class and sometimes too much homework; Students stay up in night and wake up
really late in the afternoon, they can get enough food and energy within a
buffet meal. Waiters in the restaurant will ask and bring you the drink you
want but it in only for soda. If you want to get some extra drink like alcohol,
you have to pay for it. The original cost of the meal is about 20 at weekends,
but it has a sale of 50% off for children under 12 and free for babies. Even people
know that the children and even babies are not able to eat a lot, this is still
a point that attract people’s attention and make consumer think that the restaurant
is substantial. On the table, there is a stove for cooking. This barbeque only offer
the materials for cooking so people have to cook by themselves. There is an
exhaust fan above the table which can provide consumers a good environment
while cooking and eating in this restaurant. Actually, there are some outdoor
tables so they don’t have exhaust fans over there. The main food in that
restaurant is meat. They have pork and beef and also squid there. This buffet
provides many kinds of side dish there like the chicken wings, oysters, noodles
and sushi as well. All the sides there all in order, which means they suggest
people to eat these sides in order just like having a soup in the beginning and
get some chicken and shrimps with vegetables for solving the hunger before
cooking the meat and the final porridge. Children and even teenagers can have
fun there because there is a large chocolate fountain and the snacks are so
delicious. I like the thick pork the most. As being the main food in this
restaurant, this kind of pork is one of the most popular, famous and delicious meat
there. Because they are in small pieces, the pork could be cooked quickly and tasted
really soft. The pork should be put in the sauce they provided so it can help
the meat taste better. However, for some other meat like the steak and squid,
there are some sauces on it. Some of them are delicious but the other is like
having the strange taste which is not suitable for me at all. I enjoy the service
of the waiters as well. After cooking for a lot of meat, the stove is getting
dirty with a lot of sauces on it. The waiters are walking around all the time
and they will change a new one for you without you calling. They help you refill
the drinks as well. However, before paying the bills, if wasting any food,
especially the sushi and the meat, they may ask you to pay the fine, and it’s
depends on the value of cost.
Comparing to the American barbeque, the Korean
barbeque especially the Q Table BBQ Buffet, there are more sides and snacks for
them. The meat over there is in small pieces instead of having the whole
chicken or steak. The food is more complicated, especially the Q Table, I found
a lot of Chinese like some specially noodles and the Japanese food like sushi. So,
it means the food in this restaurant across the Asian especially like China and
Japan for the famous food. I think it is the most special part of the restaurant
which attracts a lot of Asians and even Americans to come.
For having a Korean buffet BBQ with the food
across the whole Asia, Q Table BBQ Buffet attracts more and more people’s attention.
For having the combination of food in Asia, this restaurant is like a mixture of
the culture and food of Asia which can make a new understanding of Asian food for
the Americans. Also, by having the food from other parts of Asia, other Asians like
the Chinese and Japanese may become a significant part of their consumers and friends.
It is also a good choice for Americans to change their diet of simple food or fast
food style into a complex one because there are a lot of types to choose. I think
the Q Table is a successful business of restaurant and it will make a bigger success
in the future.

In Cate’s article, the author showed the life and diet in a San Francisco Country Jail, the food is very simple there without any extra meals night even their dinner starts very early in the afternoon. All the people there are having the same food and just eat for survival. They learn to cook for themselves and share food with each other. They have leader there and saved food for people who need. This kind of mind and behavior becomes a spirit and had a beneficial influence on the further development like the economy and the society.
In O’Donnell’s article, I found that the author pointed out the differences of the requirement of food between different groups of people. Because of talking about the food in Shenzhen, a city near the sea, some people like eating fish instead of meat. Also, the author mentioned a kind of spirit in this city, the spirit of the old Shenzheners. As one of the developed city in China, Shenzhen was set as one of the center of business and economy. It attracts people’s attention to work in Shenzhen because as developing, the environment of working is getting better. By the appearance of the immigration, the citizens are grouped into two classes, the old citizens and the immigrants. The old Shenzheners prefer the atmosphere of the spirit of the old Shenzhen; they paid more attention to the tradition which can remember their feeling and their effort of work in the past. But the immigrants don’t, the only care about the best restaurants and go for the enjoyable food and service. In Suzhou, they are also a lot of immigrants and they did not pay any attention to the local traditional food at all. Instead, the just go for the newest or the most famous place to eat.

Ran's post In my two advertisement, I talked about the same points and the differences about the green tea and drinks. I analysis the difference and the advantages for the tea and the drinks. However, for Ran, he gets his two advertisements from the Chinese and American food. He picked two of his favorite sauces. He mentioned the classes and the audiences from the favor, price and the long history of the brand while talking about the Chinese sauce called Lao Gan Ma. On the other hand, while talking about the american one, he mentioned some words like "Only 4.9% fat" which can attract people's attention and compared with the first as well. Developing the culture: The green tea and the green tea drinks
Green Tea is a very common but healthy
drink. In china, it has been popular for thousands of years because of the
Chinese long history. There are some many kinds of Chinese green tea like
“Longjing” and “Biluochun” which is expensive but popular that my parents
enjoying drinking it the whole time. So there comes a lot of bottle drinks but
not really made from the tea leaves of the fantastic green tea leaves.
There is a kind of green tea drink in
China. As I said before, it is a kind of green tea drink which is not the same
as the green tea itself. Firstly, it was made by a company which is called Tongyi.
This company is famous by making food and drinks especially in China. It has
made a lot of noodles and drinks like ice tea. All the products it makes are
popular in China and people in China always go for brands.
They
think the famous brand can represent good stuffs with the good quality and
people’s interest. Therefore, the brand of “Tongyi” makes a large number of

drinks has the favor of the Jasmine Flowers. There
are some words like “close to the nature” on the paper covering the bottle
shows the green tea is made from natural material. Although it is only a drink
which is not so healthy for people’s need, the showing of the natural making
material is also a good way of attract people’s attention. People may feel time
drink is less harmful to their bodies compared the other green tea drinks
without a label of natural material on the bottle. Thirdly, the whole bottle is
green including the bottle cap at the very top of it. The paper covering the
bottle has the theme of green and nature as well. It looks so suitable for this
drink and consumers may have a feel of harmony while looking at it. By making
the consumers comfortable, the packaging could have more people buying and
drinking more green tea drinks. I love this drink and always bring some with
me; the smell and taste are pure and fresh. I enjoy drinking after meals, not
only the taste is great but also it helps me a lot about solving the thirsty
after having the salty food.
However, my mother always asks me to
drink real green tea instead of this kind of green tea. Comparing with the
drinks, the green tea is healthier because the composition of the tea is really
beneficial for people to keep fit. Tea can not only solve people from being
thirsty but also refresh people about having a good mental state. As we know,
people drink coffee and tea to help them wake up in the morning and they don’t
drink too much at night or they will not be able to fall in sleep easily. Because
it can make people keep fit, a lot of people around me like drink green tea
especially the old and the middle-aged people. One of the most popular green
tea in China is called “Biluochun”. As can be seen from the second
advertisement, the picture was found in a tea celling website. The tea is
packaged in a can and putted in a box with golden silk. In such big box, there
are only two cans which mean the tea is not cheap at all. Actually, in Suzhou,
the tea is so popular that all the people go to buy it while it appears on the
market. The farmers plant the tea carefully and a lot of workers are hurt every
year while firing the tea. People give the tea to others as a present while
meeting some relatives or the important partners while working.
Compared with the drink, the Biluochun
is like a symbol of the traditional and expensive green tea. It is for the
adults while meeting other people or enjoying at home. All the steps of making
tea having careful study so that some people have experience about making the
tea smells well with fantastic taste. The green tea is the natural products so
it has a lot of nutrition and benefit for our daily need. However, even the
green tea drinks have some labels of natural materials, but they are actually
the combination of the water, tea, sugar and some additive. So, they don’t help
people’s health at all. On the other hand, the tea drinks in not expensive at
all. Since most of the drinks are cold drinks packaging in the bottles, they
are welcome for the teenagers. Moreover, bottle drinks are convenient that the
students and the workers can just buy one and drink while working or having
class. It can help people solving thirsty quickly.
Recently, I found the green tea is helpful to our eyesight. Since having poor
eyesight, there are a lot of inconveniences happening in my life. I hope that
this condition could be changed so I keep drinking green tea or even this kind
of drinks every day.
China is a big country with long history
even about drinking tea. The traditional green tea like Biluochun keeps being
popular for thousands of years and the new products like the tea drinks are
also sold well because of the teenagers. They are beneficial to the development
tea culture in China even the drinks can remind young people of the long
history of tea in China.

The analysis of the chip advertisement
In the article “Authenticity
in America”, written by Freedman and Jurafsky about the
advertisement on potato chips. The authors mainly thought of the main factors
and divide them into several groups like High-Falutin, Health, Distinction and Authenticity.
I found the most interesting in the first part of the analysis: High-Falutin. For
example, in the first group of analysis, the author talked about the
relationship between classes and health. “Education and health are two factors
that have been strongly associated with differences in socioeconomic status for
a long time.”(2) This sentence shows that health is so important while consumer
shopping for goods, so the factor of education is. It also gives the audience a
clear view of that not only the health has a relationship with classes but also
education may have some influence about it. The authors pointed out that for
different classes, the requirement of goods are different so the same
advertisement can’t attract their interest and attention all the time. There
are two examples that the authors showed about the advertisement for different price
level: Inexpensive: “What gives our chips their exceptional great taste? It’s
no secret. It’s the way they’re made!” Expensive: “We use totally natural
ingredients, hand-rake every batch and test chips at every stage of preparation
to ensure quality and taste.”(2) As can be seen from these examples, the people
in the inexpensive class are attracted by the great taste of the chips but the
expensive class cares more about the resource that made the chips which is
natural and healthier. The authors also mentioned that people should focus on
the words for the advertising for different classes. It’s on the both part of
word account and the word usage on the advertisement. Moreover, in other parts
of analysis, there are still some convincing reasons like, in the Health, the
authors said that chips are not healthy food at all but the use of MSG and
gluten could make it worse. Also, it is relative to the class level that the
expensive class need healthier food without too much MSG and gluten but use
other material instead.

Food changes relationship: the salty food and the natural taste food
“You eat too salty, try some vegetables here.” I still
remembered that my mum always complained that father eats too salty while
talking with my grandparents. In my family now, only my father enjoy salty food
but others prefer the natural taste. Mum doesn’t like putting too much salt and
she never uses monosodium glutamate while cooking. Dad doesn’t like the food
without strong taste and he said this kind of food can’t help him eating more
rice at all. They have argued for several times about the taste of food and asked
me for idea. I stand for my mother now even I prefer staying with my father
when I was young.
Fathers are usually busy men. So my dad is. In my mind,
he almost never went home for dinner even weekends. Dad is a business man now
and he has his own company about construction. As being the boss of the
company, he has too much work to do and a lot of people to meet. Although they
meet in the experience and magnificent restaurants and hotels, the food is not
as good as the one we eat at home. Cooks put a lot of monosodium glutamates to
make the food delicious and they use the heavy ways to cook the food into hot,
salty and spicy taste. It is not good news at all, because in some place, the
cooks use bad materials to cook in this way. Since the taste is very heavy,
some food which may go bad can’t be tasted easily. Even all the restaurants
that they go to are prefect but eating monosodium glutamates or too much salt
is not good for the health either. In my mum’s word, “why not eating more food
instead of salt and monosodium glutamates?” It seems like a joke but I think
she is right. Dad’s taste is becoming a bad habit which may reduce the ability
of taste in some other food. For example, after eating some mangos, you may
found oranges are not sweet at all but very sour. It’s like the tongue is
comparing with the things that you have already eaten. While eating too much
salty food, it’s getting harder for a tongue to feel some delicious taste which
is not so strong but feels good. Possibly, it’s a kind of failure of the
function of a tongue. The food that dad outside is usually magnificent with a
lot of meat and fish because dad needs to meet others so that they can help
them going on some programmers on the business. The lack of the vegetable is a
big problem in his daily life. Dad was told that he had some illness like hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Most
of the problem is the carelessness of the diet and some details in daily life
just like the taste.
I
also enjoyed the spicy and strong state food in the past especially when I was
a young boy. I didn’t eating the food cooked by mum every day because she has to
work until 6 pm in evening so there is no time for mum to cook. I stayed in my
grandparent’s home instead. Grandma is a good cook but not as good as mum in my
mind. Working for government is a tough work without a high payment. However, I
can go to eat in the dining hall with my father. Moreover, dad also took me to
some restaurant even eating fast food like McDonalds and Pizza Hut. When I was
eleven, something unlucky happened; mum was hurt in a car accident. Fortunately,
my mum is still alive but she needed a long period of time to recover. During
this period of time, dad usually brought me outside to eat and my taste was
totally changed. I was going to be the man eating different kinds of salty
things just like my father now. In the first days after my mum came back, I
first thought her food was so tasteless and it hurt my mum’s heart. Later on, I
just fit the taste and getting comfortable with that. Because of the work, dad
still needs to eat outside and getting worse after starting his own business.
Now,
even eating a bowl of rice, dad needs some special spicy sauce for him but mum
and I just eating with some dishes. In my hometown Suzhou, there are too much delicious
food like the lake crabs, white shrimps and white fish. We have our special
cooking methods making special tastes. Even a bowl of noodle, it is quite
different from the noodles in any other city in China. After studying abroad, I
missed Chinese food so much so that I went to a lot of Chinese restaurants
here. However, it is not the real Chinese food; Chinese students can taste the
difference clearly. They used monosodium glutamate and too much salt in cooking
and can’t get the real delicious taste from the food. After eating, it’s easy
to feel thirsty because of the wrong way of cooking. Salt can absorb the water,
so the reason of getting thirsty is too much salt. Moreover, the best point
that my mum’s food has is never getting thirsty.
